Playing At SXSW?

SXSW 2009: by the Numbers, Part 1 (via Matthew Wettergreen)

Our new friend, and future contributer, Matthew Wettergreen recently published some interesting analysis of the attendance trends of SXSW on his personal website.  He was kind enough to allow us to link up his findings here on AudioADD.  Wettergreen's research includes surveys of the genre and geography of SXSW's musical showcases from 2005-2009.  

The results of Wettergreen's research are quite puzzling.  Houston's representation at the event, for example, has dropped significantly over the past year, with 66% less showcases compared to 2008.  Wettergreen's analysis however, both extensive and thorough, makes for a very engaging read.  Drop by his site and check out his findings.  Any thoughts on why the significant changes have occurred?
